Shelf Stable baby food is heated to extremely high temperatures (often 2 times, above 185 degrees), killing off vital nutrients, enzymes, and healthy bacteria that are critical for babies healthy growth and development. Oftentimes pre-processed purees are imported from overseas that have already been pre-cooked. Once the puree arrives in the facility, the manufacturer will mix the purees and cook the blend again inside plastic packaging. The result is basically a jam that has been condensed down into simple sugars. Research has shown these sugary baby foods are causing a sweet tooth later on. Shelf stable baby food often contains concentrates, preservatives, juices and/or fillers, resulting in a food that is even further away from its source. At Once Upon a Farm, we do things differently. We use High-Pressure Pascalization, which uses pressure instead of heat to kill off any potentially harmful ingredients. This process also allows us to maintain a higher vitamin and mineral content than any similar shelf stable baby food on the market. We do not use any pre-processed purees, juices, concentrates or fillers. We only use whole ingredients that have mainly been sourced from local farms here in the USA. No one can deny the look, taste, and smell of fresh versus processed food. Try mashing up a fresh mango vs. eating a shelf stable mango baby food and a Once Upon a Farm mango baby food. Organic food is produced without using pesticides, fertilizers, synthetic ingredients, bioengineering or ionizing radiation. Before a food can be truly “certified organic”, a government-approved certifier must inspect the farm where the food is grown to ensure the farmer is following all rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards.
Since babies are so much smaller than adults, they are much more vulnerable to toxins in their diet. Their livers are not developed as much; therefore, they will be unable to eliminate toxins as fast as an adult would. We do not currently know how these toxins affect the brain and physical development. However, there is substantial toxicologic evidence that repeated low-level exposure to organophosphate (OP) pesticides might affect neurodevelopment and growth in developing animals. It is also thought that these pesticides may be related to respiratory problems in developing children as well as reduced brain weight. Organic farming keeps these synthetic pesticides out of the food that our children eat. Organic farming also helps our environment by reducing toxic farming runoff and pollutants that contaminate our soil, air and water. Plus, organic food simply tastes better!
By law, anything that is certified organic cannot contain genetically modified ingredients. However, to give further peace of mind around the ones we love most, we are Non-GMO Project Verified.
Your pouches will last for 3 days after opening. If unopened, it will be good until the “Enjoy by” date on the back of the pouch. You can always freeze your pouches for 6 months all the way up to the expiration date. Upon thawing, it must be consumed within 24 hours. We recommend that if you are going to heat up the food that you place the pouch in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes. Always test the food to make sure it is temperature appropriate before feeding it to your baby. Our pouches are not microwavable. We do not recommend that you ever microwave your food as this creates new compounds that our bodies cannot recognize.
Our cold-pressured meals should be treated like yogurt. However, if traveling, the pouches can be carried with an ice pack, or they can be frozen and then thawed thoroughly before eating. If frozen and put in lunches, they can also help keep other food cold. They also taste great as a slushy! To take through TSA, simply designate them as baby food and put them in a separate bin.
Our food is best served at temperatures below 118 degrees. This ensures that vital enzymes and nutrients are kept intact, giving your baby the maximum amount of nutrition available in the food. Do not reheat your baby food more than once and do not refreeze unused portions that have already been defrosted.
Yes! And we highly recommend it. Any unused portions (or full portions if you prefer) may be consumed by adults. You will be giving yourself superfoods that may increase your overall vitality. Enjoy straight out of the pouch, put fresh or frozen portions into smoothies, or use it as a topper on ice cream!

Our baby food packaging is 100% recyclable. Just snip off the spout and the cap and throw them in the recycling bin or visit our Pinterest page to discover fun activities and crafts you can do with our caps. The pouch is specialty recyclable and can be upcycled through specialty recycling centers such as terracycle. Pouches take less energy to make and less energy to transport than rigid plastic containers or glass jars.
We recommend spoon feeding your little one in the early months. Once they get older and can self-feed, they can drink out of the pouch, like a smoothie. Always consult your baby’s pediatrician before introducing your baby to new foods, as they may have additional tips and information. Below are some helpful suggestions:
  • Add breast milk or formula to the puree
  • Warm the food by immersing squeeze packs in warm water for a few minutes. Just make sure to test the temperature before feeding it to your baby.
  • Have your baby sit on your lap or buckle him or her in their highchair.
  • Make feeding fun! Put a small amount of food on an infant spoon and hold it about 10 inches away from his/her mouth. Try making silly and exciting sounds as you approach your baby’s mouth with the spoon. If your baby refuses to open his or her mouth, do not force it. If your baby doesn’t like the spoon, try offering some food off your finger first.
  • Go with your baby’s cues. Feed your baby as slow or fast as they like. They may only want a couple spoonfuls the first time around.
  • Next time you may have a different experience.
  • Stop feeding your baby when he or she turns their head away, closes their mouth tight, or starts to cry.
  • Don’t give up if your baby doesn’t like the food the first time around. It may take several tries before your baby is ready to experiment. Adults can eat any unused portions!
Always check with your baby’s pediatrician if you have any concerns about how much your baby is eating. For the most part babies should eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full. Some babies will eat more than others. Some days your baby will eat more and other days less. Trust your baby’s signals.
